We all met up in the car park at Zig Zag for a 9.30 departure. Contrary to earlier forecasts the weekend weather had turned out perfectly and this saw several of us voicing our disappointment that we had decided against camping at Newnes. After the meet and greet with members and introductions with our visitors Matt, Kelly, Michaela and Elliott we set off toward Bungle Boree picnic area.

It was somewhat eerie driving through after the recent bush fires and it had most of us feeling as if we had taken a wrong turn. Eventually we did miss the turn off near Bungle Boree but realised pretty quickly and only had to double back a short distance. We turned off the main track and headed down to lost City and decided to take a secondary track and do some exploring. We found a great little track that crossed a couple of valleys and ridge lines to rejoin the lost city track. While not to difficult it did require careful wheel placement and a little exterior guidance. Everyone got through unscathed and it made for an interesting addition to the trip.

We continued on to Lost City parking at the top before walking down. It was amazing to see the bush trying to regenerate so soon after the fires had been through. The landscape looks so different and without the undergrowth the pagoda formations have taken on a more dominant feel. Hopefully nature will soon see the area return to normal. After spending a while at lost city trying not to get blown off the rocks we headed back to the cars and down to Black Fellows Hand Cave for lunch and a walk up to the caves. Those who hadn’t been up here before grabbed some photos as the rest of us were speculating as to the age of the art works.

After returning to our cars we continued on to Newnes for an ice cream and a wander through the hotel and a chat with a few fellow 4WDers. A quick lap around the camp site before heading for home confirmed it would have been a great weekend to be there as the place was all but deserted.

Thanks to everyone for coming out for a fun day.
