After a week or so of wet weather leading up to this trip it was a relief to get out past Lithgow and find some blue sky and a little bit of sunshine. Unfortunately this did not last and we had to set up camp in the Hill End Village camp ground between showers before sitting down to dinner and a few quite drinks. Friday morning was spent exploring the Bridle track and testing out how well we could get up some of the slopes on the side tracks with one of us (no names or pack drill) getting stuck on a slippery slope and a bad angle and then requiring a guided walk down. After lunch we headed back down the Bridle Track where Earl and Mark took all the kids for a swim in the Macquarie River while the rest of us watched on and played photographer. Friday night involved a few more drinks around the campfire and the arrival of Aaron and Kylie who had both had to work.
Saturday morning after breakfast we all headed out of town to meet up with Ted, a local gold panning guide, who was to take us out to the gold fields to try and strike it rich. We spent several hours leaning to pan for gold and pretty much everyone found a little bit with most of the kids thinking they would never have to work a day for the rest of their lives !! The afternoon was spent wandering around town and looking at what’s left of it before heading up to the Royal Hotel for dinner. The kids were left to run around in the 3 acre paddock next to the beer garden while the adults enjoyed a quiet drink or two before dinner.
Sunday morning again saw clear skies to make packing up less of a chore and after a little more time spent wandering around town and grabbing a coffee we all headed for home. A great time was had by all and we can’t wait for our next visit to Hill End.
